When I was in elementary school one of my classes' favorite pranks was to play "opposite day" on my teacher. When she told us to sit down, we would do the opposite and stand up. When she told us not to be quiet in class, we would talk at the top of our voices. The object of the game was to completely disregard the ordinary directions that my teacher gave us to make her angry. However, this innocent and silly elementary school game takes on a much more serious tone in this image.

Our attention is first drawn to the figure in the middle of the picture. We see that he is an average man, small in size and not very intimidating and that he is handcuffed and surrounded by tall strong police officers. Next we notice that these police officers are all black. They carry large guns, wear riot gear and seem to be escorting the white man who appears to be a criminal. Behind the man we see a small house with that appears to be bars on the windows. The black officers appear to be escorting the white criminal out of this small, plain house. Even the camera men in the foreground of the picture are black. This seems to be an ordinary picture of a crime scene, however the title of the picture argues us into something different.

The title “Opposite Day”, suggests that the roles in this picture are reversed. The title is saying that in every day life, it is the norm for a criminal to be a black man that is caught by white police officers. It asks us to believe that criminals are usually black men, who are sooner than later captured by big, strong, white police officers. This photo and title fuel the racial stereotype of black men being criminals and trouble makers. It also suggests, like Dyer's argument, that white males have the power in society.

My initial reaction to this photographer was one of shock and anger. The title at the bottom of the page is in white, large print with an exclamation mark at the end. This suggested to me that the creator of this image found it funny to suggest that all black men are criminals. This image encourages the political stereotype of black males as being criminals.

  1. When I looked at this picture for the first time I was shocked. I can not believe that someone would find this amusing. The only thing this image does is support the negative stereotypes that society has put in place. I disagree with the argument being made in this image and I don't like how "raced" and "classed" bodies are being used in this image.

  2. I this is this absolutely ridiculous. This image is completely giving me something to argue about. I feel this is horrible. It makes me think that it is normal for black people to get arrested and that there are only white cops. I cannot believe that someone published this and that the unfortunate thing is that many would agree with this and get a good laugh out of this image. It is a damaging image for black people but a very good image to blog about.
