Men wearing earrings

A body practice that has recently become very popular is ear piercings for men. Up until the late 1970’s men were hardly ever seen wearing earrings. It was considered something taboo and for the gay man. However, since then men wearing earrings has become so common that, people don’t take much notice to it anymore. It has even become for some men the ideal docile body practice.

With more stars such as Chris tucker, David Beckham, and even Justin Bieber beginning to wear the earrings, our cultural view on men wearing earrings has changed. That is because they hold the constitutive power to change our praxis on what defines male. Furthermore, this has created an other orientated economy for the purchase of earrings. This happens because more males fell that in order to be considered cool that they should dress up like movie stars, and thus wear the earrings.

In all, it is very interesting to see how our culture changes in a matter of 40 years on the acceptance of men wearing earrings.

  1. Since starting college, I have had thoughts about getting an ear pierced. I'm not really sure what it is because it's not for any like cool factor, more like just something different and new. Although that's just what college is all about. After all one thing I did last year was shave my head, extremely different and new from the afro that I've had most of my life.
