This image I found on a website for the organization Taking Action Against Racism. This group had many pages speaking out against racism, a couple being titled overt racism, microaggressions, and white privilege. This image was in the overt racism category.
The first time you see this image, the Ku Klux Klan member sticks out. The KKK is a group that I’m sure everyone knows about as, at least for me, it’s been a full section in basically every history class I’ve had from around the 5th grade and up. The KKK was strongest and had the most support for it in the early 1920s. However, a part that might slip people’s minds is that it is still alive today. They have approximately 5000 members and are widely considered to be a terrorist organization. The KKK is the face of what people think of as racism. The KKK as a group is an extremely raced body.
As you dig a little deeper into this image, past the KKK member, you see the left half. In this picture there is some old man holding a stuffed monkey and from the hat on its head you can tell the monkey is Obama. This is clearly then a present day image so we see how racism is still present in our society today.
When I first saw this image, I think I might have actually been laughing by how completely ridiculous it was. I showed it to a couple of friends and we just could not believe it. This old man was likening President Obama to a monkey. He’s not in private as there are other people in the background, so he’s being openly racist out in public and he seems happy about it. He’s actually smiling/laughing at how much he enjoys his little Obama monkey. He is being completely disrespectful, inhumane, and makes me want to gag.
Politically, the KKK is a far right extremist group. The fact that this still exists in our culture today is just plain sad. This image makes our world look horrible. The bodies, white bodies that is, within our world look disgusting. If this image was consistent with every white body in the world I would not want to be alive. Thankfully I did not live in the 1920s!
