"Music is a universal language, and needs not be translated. With it soul speaks to soul." - Berthold Auerbach
A personal favorite quote of mine about music. I am a fan of all kinds of music, genre does not matter to me as long as it sounds good. My music library ranges from rock, to hip hop, neo classical, drum and bass, instrumental to even songs that are in a language that i don't even understand. Music is a large part of our culture, and I would argue of every culture.
I haven't come across any person that doesn't enjoy music (if there is such a person, they are probably alone right now) and it is kind of hard subject to "argue" as the assignment is asking as music is subjective. But the best thing that can be argued and is universal in all music is the cultural impact that music has, and that it is entertaining. Music in all its forms, brought down to its bare bones is about entertainment and cater to your emotion. Obviously this varies from person to person as we all have different emotions and how we react to them, maybe thats why some people prefer one genre over another. And music has been used as rhetoric more than ever in this era of the art. With people bringing their ideas and beliefs into songs and help persuade others and this goes beyond just entertainment and can be to inform. And many major artist, in a way have created constructed society through their music. But the signifier for music can vary from song to song. One song can signify love, while another geared towards angst. It would be difficult to argue songs like "almost lover" by A fine Frenzy is a happy song, or AC/DC's Shock me all night is int about having wild sex all night. So it is difficult to know the signifier for music as it varies from song to song.
But in the end, its all about what sounds good. And its the annoying song ever (friday?) and you enjoyed it, keep on listening...just dont blast it
