Advertising Weight Loss

lipozene-300x182.jpg

While I was taking a break from intense studying/homework this weekend, I flipped on the television and saw a commercial for a weight loss pill called Lipozene. The commercial made it seem as if this product was a complete break through and that there has never been a pill that supposedly made it so easy to lose weight. The commercial repeatedly said that this product was clinically proven to help reduce body fat and weight. I immediately thought to myself that this was complete b.s. just like any other weight loss supplement I've ever heard about. Why is it that we Americans always need the easy way out? Have we really become that lazy as a country that we can not even lose weight the conventional way? Our media these days pushes us to be thin and healthy but does anyone actually get thin and healthy in a healthy manner? I was interested to see how this Lipozene actually worked so I did a little research and found out it is a scam and isn't at the same time. The only ingredient in this "weight loss break through" is glucomannan. Glucomannan is an appetite suppressor that actually has been proven to help you lose up to 5.5 pounds in 2 months. It does actually work but not the way we are conned into thinking from the commercial. On the commercial it offers a free 30 day trial, which persuades us to think that this product will help one lose a substantial amount of weight in 1 month. However this is not true, after only 30 days of taking this pill, you would only lose up to roughly 2 pounds. Being on a healthy diet and exercising regularly would be a more efficient way to lose weight, in a healthier manner. So, for someone who is looking to lose weight can either take a pill and very slowly lose weight, or they can go old school and change their eating habits and exercise regularly to lose more weight in a much healthier way. Being Americans though, we of course have the choice. Which one would you make?

  1. Hello, my name is Jason Brennan. I was drawn to your post because these sort of exaggerated adds always annoy me. I feel as though this pseudoscientific advertising has infected our everyday lives. We see adds for some breakthrough something that can fix age old problem. They claim they've done "clinical testing" or guarantee it works as well as they say. If it seems too good to be true it most likely is. Unfortunately all this b.s. advertising forces us to have the dismissive mentality which may then cause us to overlook some actual breakthrough in science/health.

  2. I was also drawn to your post because of these exaggerated adds. I have watched many of these types of adds on television and they never seem to stop. I hate the fact that they prey on insecure people and try to get them to buy a product that usually doesn't work. People need to stop living in a fantasy world and start making changes to their lifestyle in order to loose weight.
