Love in a cat food commercial?

So yes, I chose a relatively “mushy” item to analyze, but the first time I saw this commercial all I could think was, ‘Wow, they got me to totally understand that entire commercial with no words what so ever.’

So, the number of signs in this commercial are almost uncountable.  That’s why I’ve decided to focus on one group of them: how we know the video is about the boyfriend meeting the parents (signified).

From the very beginning you can tell that the twenty-something aged man and woman are a couple.  She stops him before they get to the door and straightens his tie and gives him an encouraging smile (signifier).  At first it may not be clear what is happening, that is until the door to the big house opens and the young woman hugs the people inside.  The introductions take place and you quickly realize that this is the “meet the parents” situation that almost every man dreads (and the wine bottle with the bow in his hands is a great tell-tale sign J[signifier]).

When the family is as the dinner table, the mom and dad of the family notice that their daughter is happy – she leans over and kisses her boyfriend’s cheek and the video cuts to the parents giving each other knowing, approving smiles (signifier).

In our culture we can recognize these signifier and realize that they are signifying something bigger (a sign).  And to imagine – this commercial did it all without any words!  Amazing!

Also, check out the "extended cut" of this commercial, and the sequel!  :-)

  1. Yes… Because cats are one of the most loving animals. That is why many households prefer to have cats as pets. This commercial moved me… I have the same feeling as you. Even if they didn't say a word, the whole story is understandable!
