While I was flipping through the channels this weekend I came across a show about the 20 best and worst celebrity plastic surgeries. It hadn't dawned on me at the time but after reading the assignment for our blog post this week I realized that this fit in just perfectly. The show did just as the title implies, it covered the top 20 best plastic surgeries in hollywood and also the top 20 worst surgeries in hollywood. It was extremely shocking to me to see some of the celebrities who were featured on the show because many of them were beautiful before going under the knife. A particular person who stands out to me was Kathy Griffin. Being a fan of her comedy for quite some time, I myself had never realized that she had gone under the knife multiple times for enhancements. Her first experience with plastic surgery was for liposuction of the stomach, thighs and inside of her knees. Being that she was a small girl this procedure seemed unnecessary but in a 1999 People Magazine article she was quoted saying "The idea was to look like Jennifer Anniston." This whole idea that we get from the media that being thin and tiny is the only way to get ahead in life is absolutely ridiculous. Of course average citizens fall victim to the media portrayal that women have to be thin to be beautiful but it also happens to other hollywood stars also. It's so sad that some people's perceptions of themselves are so terrible because of something they see in a magazine or on a television commercial. Everyone's bodies are unique and beautiful in their own way and its unrealistic to think that everyone or anyone for that matter can be perfect. These insecurities caused by the media can have very drastic consequences when people take them to the next level and try to alter their own bodies to look "perfect." As Kathy Griffin said herself, "plastic surgery is painful…it's sometimes successful, sometimes a flop, and sometimes life-threatening." Why are women going to such extremes that they are willing to put their life in harms way to look better?
This posting makes two really great points, I believe. First of all that women are willing to have life threatening results to look better and that it is a competition where ever you go. It is very unfortunate that women go through such procedures and take such drastic life threatening measures just to "look better". It is absolutely ridiculous and hard to watch this happen to people. This article makes a good example about Kathy Griffin, I didn't know Kathy had gotten plastic surgery and she looked fine before! That is another rough point this article points out, that most people don't even need the plastic surgery. This post is really great at pointing out the truth in my opinion.
