This picture brings forth the controversy of the ridiculous costs of education versus the price of guns. I wouldn’t say this is one of the top five controversies in the country or at least the most talked about, but I think it is very important and makes a good point. This picture I saw months ago on a church friends Facebook page, and I just kind of disregarded it because she always posts something that makes you think, and sometimes I’m just not up for that, but it is coming in handy now. This friend of mine always also seems to label people or throw her points of view out into the public whether they are offensive or not. In the United States the amount in debt from student loans has now exceeded the amount of national debt this country has. This man holding up this sign completely burns out the “typical” plan of many socially constructed plans of teenagers graduating from high school. That was the plan right? You try really hard in high school, especially during your junior year when your applying to colleges sending in your transcript and you get accepted, but you come to find out later you cannot afford to go. While during your whole life you’re supposed to stay away from trouble, gangs, violence, drugs, you go through programs like D.A.R.E and other sponsored programs so you stay out of trouble, but yet you can buy a gun quite easily. Forty-nine of the fifty states have laws allowing citizens to carry certain concealed firearms in public, either without a permit or after obtaining a permit from local law enforcement. To me, this picture says that people want to be able to have an education. People want to go on, get degrees, be successful in life, follow the trend like their friends might, but they cannot, but they can buy a gun that they can kill people with. I think this poster makes sense in the craziness of this world. I think everyone can agree, there are issues all over this world, and guns versus education is definitely one of them.

ReplyDelete"It's easier to buy a gun than my education" first one when you goole image search it! Sorry for the technical difficulties
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting topic to address since guns and education represent two different ends of the spectrum. You can either pursue post-secondary options, become educated, and find a job to become successful financially. But you can also choose to buy a gun, join a gang, sell drugs and do other illegal activities to become financially successful. Obviously there are a lot of options in between, but I feel like these are the only two this image addresses. With tuition prices so ridiculously high everywhere in the United States, the option of buying a gun and engaging in illegal activity could become more appealing. Whether this would actually happen or not is another thing, but definitely not the path I want my country to head toward.
ReplyDeleteI thought that this was a really eye-opening topic. You never really hear that much about it in the media or at least it isn't in the top news headlines. With our country's current economic situation, I think that it is really changing US culture and what individuals think about conflicts like this one. Like you said, most people want to go on and have a good education but currently that isn't an option for some people. Because of this crime will probably rise. But in order to solve this issue, our economy and all the problems our country faces economically need to be fixed first so that college tuition can be lowered and young adults will stay away from a life of violence.
ReplyDeleteThing is, education is something that is worth investing in, in four years you can have yourself set for 20+ years. You buy a gun...than what?
