Meanwhile in Mississippi... when a zygote is formed it is considered a baby?
Figure. 1 on the left for those that might not know what that is.
So my argument is again one about abortion. I am pro-choice but more pro-abortion than anything else. I understand a lot of the complaints people have about abortion but I do not understand this. In Mississippi, recently there was a bill up for vote for prohibiting abortion from the moment of fertilization; thus making the morning after pill and intrauterine devices illegal. My main argument is; is it a child at fertilization? And the problem is rape.
Looking at this with a religious standpoint, it would be considered a child; the probability of creating the zygote is almost zero, and there will never be another exactly like it, thus making it a unique human being ( I don't know how religious people classify human beings). Then the other side, those of science and those who believe in pro-choice.
I have tried very hard to understand how people can be pro-life. It is a Supreme Court precedent from Roe v. Wade that a women's private life is her choice.
Here is some information that might make a pro-life supporter understand where the pro-choice group and I are coming from.
"Nearly all abortions take place in the first trimester, when a fetus cannot exist independent of the mother. As it is attached by the placenta and umbilical cord, its health is dependent on her health, and cannot be regarded as a separate entity as it cannot exist outside her womb"
If the fetus/person cannot live on its own should we really consider it a human being?
"Abortion is a safe medical procedure. The vast majority of women - 88% - who have an abortion do so in their first trimester. Medical abortions have less than 0.5% risk of serious complications and do not affect a woman's health or future ability to become pregnant or give birth."
It is not very dangerous and there are only a handful of cases where something does go wrong.
"In the case of rape or incest, forcing a woman made pregnant by this violent act would cause further psychological harm to the victim. Often a woman is too afraid to speak up or is unaware she is pregnant, thus the morning after pill is ineffective in these situations."
In a situation like rape, it is true that there might be more damage done to the person carrying the child, they are not going to want the baby when it is born because it will be a reminder of what happened to them. Also if abortion is illegal we will see a decrease in the number of abortions but we will see an increase in the number of illegal abortions, people who do not want their baby will go to extreme measures to not have that child. And is not allowing abortions more important than the well being of many women?
People who are pro-choice if you are reading this please comment and let me know what your views are on why you disagree with abortion, I would love to know.
Finally is keeping every unborn baby alive more important than a woman's well-being; denying them rights to their own bodies given to them in a supreme court precedent? I hope you can see where pro-choice is coming from.

I never understood how people can try and make others live their life based on what THEY believe. I understand if you are pro-life, thats fine. And if you get pregnant and still want the baby, thats your choice. But if someone else, someone that you have never met, doesnt want a child, why should they comply to that persons beliefs?
ReplyDeleteI personally am against abortion, if a women wants to have one, its her choice and up to her.
I am definitely pro-life. Even if the women doesn't want to keep the baby she should still have it. There are so many other options that make so much more sense over having an abortion. If she doesn't want to keep the child then she should just put it up for adoption. There are tons of couples unable to have children that are willing to adopt. The only time that I believe abortion should be an option is when there is a significant risk involved for the mother.
ReplyDeleteAs bad as abortion may sound, babies/human beings that are kept because of "pro-life[rs]" have the same amount of dangerous effects. So the kid can be put up for adoption, right? There's plenty of mental and psychological aspects that go along with it though- the child is bound to wonder "Why am I not with my birth mother? Why did she give me up? Who am I? Where are my parents? Was I not worth it?" which could be just as harmful to the child when they are alive, than before it was even born. Besides adoption, the mother/parents could just keep the baby and struggle through raising the child. But what if her current situation could not allow a "good life" for the child due to financial issues, safety issues, stability problems, etc...and adoption was too timely and costly? The effects are just as bad as abortion, if not worst. There's an endless count of psychological effects that results from both abortion and non-abortion, but every female should have the right to her own body and choices, so long as they are sane and capable.
ReplyDeleteI honestly think abortion is grave and painful to see, but denying the right of a female's and a baby's right of choice is also painful and grave. Pro-choice seems to make most sense, I see Mr. Woods' pro-choice point.
