If you have been paying any attention to the news lately you will know that the world is abrupt with protest and revolutions. From the middle east to Greece, people are protesting their governments for not doing a good job of providing and protecting them. And we sit here in america, watching the news and encouraging these countries, and praising them as we see people fight for democracy. A chance for them to have a taste of what america has. They defy their government and and we stand by their side and say they are being patriotic.
Yet, meanwhile in american, thousands upon thousands of people are fed up of how the government has been running and many outlandish laws that keep getting passed that take away our freedom. But that isnt my issue, or the topic at hand. What my proposal is how people view these events differently based upon which country they are in.
To sum up my point; When people in other countries protest, they are fighting for democracy. When people protest in america for democracy, they are unpatriotic"
Now maybe its just me, but their is a ring of hypocrisy in this. Many times I see people, media, and politicians putting down forms of peaceful protest for change. And many of the citizens stand by their actions, while at the same time encourage other countries to protest.
Now the problem here lies in the idea of patriotism. We are taught to love our country, stand by its side and its actions. And any form of objection is an act of treason and you are labeled unpatriotic. But, isnt true patriotism loving your country AND accepting that their are faults that need to be fixed? their is a borderline between patriotism and nationalism.
Doesnt the Constitution give us the right to question our governments actions and raise our voices when we disagree? Well, in the end of the day, Im probably unpatriotic commie...
I like the memes that you posted, they are funny but also a little revealing. I agree with you completely. Protesters are usually (I say usually as there are exceptions such as the Westboro Baptist Church) very patriotic as they want to make the country better. Those who worship 'merica give the USA a bad name. Guess I'm an unpatriotic commie too.

ReplyDeleteThe revolutions going on in Libya and Syria are on a completely different level than say the Occupy protests. They are fighting for the right to speak out about contaminated water without being shot and their children tortured.
Also, too much dissent and separatism can lead to factions. Factions can lead to conflict. Conflict can lead to...
