I chose to analyze near the beginning of the movie, when Jake arrives to Pandora and the other soldiers see him for the first time. Immediately people are staring at him and doubting his abilities. When he is introduced to the coordinator of the operation, she immediately puts him down and does not think that it is worth their time or energy to try to make him something “he is not.” When she puts him in the case to be transformed into his Avatar for the first time, she sarcastically states, “So you just thought it would be a good idea to go to the most dangerous place known to mankind, without any training, and see how it goes?” He quickly responds, “Yup.” She tells him that he needs to clear his mind, and let it go blank, which probably is not that hard for him to do.
Immediately he is already faced with several people that do not believe in him and think that this is all just a waste of time, and most importantly a disgrace to what his brother, the PHD. Yet, he says that he is tired of doctors telling him what he cannot do. This shows extreme courage and determination by his character, and says a lot about who he is. When Jake first gets into his Avatar body, he seems to disregard what everyone is trying to advise; to move slowly, take it step by step, try different functions before running off.
But Jake, almost in his own little world of determination does not have any interest in listening to what other people think that he cannot do. Like stated before, this entire scene shows a lot about Jake’s character and sets the stage for the type of person he is going to play in this movie. From seeing how passionate and curious he is, and how hard he is trying to pursue things he wants to do, it shows us that he is going to be a confident and strong person throughout the movie. Each person had doubts with Jake because of his limitations, but he seemed to be more determined than others around that he was going to do a great job and prove the others wrong.
This entire scene is a great depiction of the underdog that no one believes in at first, and then he pulls much more of his weight throughout the movie than any of the characters expect him too. He becomes the most successful and useful human being on Pandora solely because of his strong heart and determination.
ReplyDeleteFrom the opposite viewpoint, I thought it was so interesting how they just wanted him to step into his brother’s shoes. They thought that since they were brothers, oh they must have the same goals and objectives. No one gave a thought to the idea that maybe he didn’t want to take his brother’s roles. Interesting how in the beginning of the movie (right in the first 5-10 minutes) I had the total opposite opinion. The authority who was with him when he saw his brother, dead, just assumed he could/would so anything his brother could/would do.
